Course Director

Nat is a practising GP and for over twenty years has held senior clinical leadership positions in primary and community care organisations providing treatment to those dependent upon alcohol or drugs. As a non-executive director of SLD Training, he oversees the delivery of the UK RCGP accredited courses in substance and alcohol misuse. Over the last 20 years almost 30,000 individuals have completed such courses and Nat has contributed to course development since inception. He is also the Primary Care Specialty Lead, for the UK National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (Yorkshire and Humber) and he has contributed to over two hundred peer reviewed publications and invited conference presentations pertaining to treatment of addictions.

Course overview

The misuse of alcohol is a serious health issue of national concern with evidence of significant harms caused by misuse in the UK and worldwide. Dealing with the consequences of physical and mental health and the impact on society is a challenge for everybody working in healthcare.

This certificated training has been developed in response to increasing demand for education in the treatment for alcohol misuse.

The training course aims to improve participants’ understanding of alcohol-related problems and equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage their patients and supporting carers.


Learning outcomes

  • Identify alcohol related harm and dependent drinking.
  • Diagnose severity of alcohol dependence.
  • Understand and describe treatment options.
  • Develop skills to effectively treat problem drinking.
  • Deliver enhanced services for problem drinkers.


Course details

  • A full face-to-face RCGP accredited training day.
  • Completion of an e-Learning module, accessible here.
  • 10 CPD hours will be gained on completion of this course.

Virtual delivery

Certification 

To gain your RCGP Accredited Certificate of Completion, you must ensure you have completed the following:

  • Paid in full for the course prior to the training day
  • Attend a full Training day - missing any part of the training day will mean we are unable to mark you as attended and you will be ineligible for certification
  • Complete the eLearning module with an overall pass score of 70% or above
  • Compete and submit the feedback for the course, located on the eLearning site
